Plasma exchange for primary autoimmune autonomic failure.

We report on a patient with long-standing severe autonomic failure that affected his sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Antibodies against the ganglionic acetylcholine receptors were detected in the serum. Removal of the antibodies by means of plasma exchange resulted in a dramatic clinical improvement.

Autonomic failure in primary amyloidosis.

Amyloidosis is an uncommon plasma cell dyscrasia affecting Multisystem, characterized by deposition of amyloid proteins in extracellular spaces and the tissues. Reported incidence of amyloidosis is 8 cases per million per year. Deposition of amyloid fibrils occurs in peripheral nerves in 20% of the cases in Primary Amyloidosis. Though. polyneuropathy is one of the presenting manifestations in c...

Autoimmune ganglionic blockade. A cause of autonomic failure. Focus on "Experimental Autoimmune Autonomic Neuropathy".

If we are seeking evidence about the importance of the autonomic nervous system in daily life, we need only witness the disabling nature of autonomic disorders. Patients with severe autonomic failure are unable to stand but for few seconds, before syncope ensue due to orthostatic hypotension. The autonomic nervous system modulates the function of virtually all organ systems; thus these patients...

Plasma exchange in primary biliary cirrhosis.

Introduction Primary biliary cirrhosis (chronic, destructive, nonsuppurative cholangitis) is often accompanied by unpleasant complications such as pruritus, cutaneous lipid deposits, painful 'neuropathy', occlusive vascular disease and 'cholesterol arthritis' (Mills et al., 1978; Child, Mathews and Thompson, 1977), and all may be intractable to treatment. The pathogenesis of these clinical feat...

Experimental autoimmune autonomic neuropathy.

Antibodies specific for the neuronal ganglionic nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) are found in high titer in serum of patients with subacute autonomic failure. This clinical disorder is known as autoimmune autonomic neuropathy (AAN). Rabbits immunized with a neuronal nAChR alpha3 subunit fusion protein produce ganglionic nAChR antibodies and develop autonomic failure (experimental AAN, o...
